Caption: Edwin Hudson, 79, chats with Judy McCown, 36 of Madison Heights while waiting for the commencement exercises to begin at the University of Detroit. He graduated Saturday, 43 years after he started. He earned his bachelor's degree in philosophy. Hudson, who lives on the east side of Detroit, enrolled at University of Detroit in 1945 but quit several years later to take a job as clerk in the Wayne County Probate Court. He said that college hadn't changed much through the years, but said professors of the modern era are more down-to-earth. For his perseverance he was awarded the school's annual True Grit Award.
