Description
Caption: This mural, The Romance of Monroe, by Ralf Henricksen, Chicago, is in the Monroe post office, on the Historic Trail. The post office stands on the site of the Bacon homestead, depicted in the new film, "They Died With Their Boots On," the life of General Custer. Judge Daniel Bacon built the original home. His daughter, "Libby" (Elizabeth Bacon Custer) first met the general as a youth, according to family legend, when she was swinging on the gate in front of the house and the big, blond-haired boy came along from school. "Hello, Yellow Hair," she yelled at him, and then ran into the house. The Custer family moved into the Bacon home for a time when they came to Monroe.
