Caption: Jex Bardwell: Camera PioneerJex Bardwell, an expert chemist, was one of the first professional photographers in Michigan--at least 150 pictures spanning 50 years. And the work of his that remains establishes him as the State's only photo-journalist in the manner of a Matthew Brady. He died at 79 in 1902. The Burton Historical Collection of the Detroit Public Library has his work from 1850 on.
