Caption: Cassandra Spratling: About the author: to report this series, education writer Cassandra Spratling did a month of research, then spent two weeks visiting the campuses of 12 historically black colleges in six states and Washington, D.C. Spratling, 27, joined the Free Press as an intern in 1980. She became a reporter on The Way We Live staff in March 1981, and moved to the city desk to cover education in August 1982. Previously, she was a reporter for the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune. Spratling, a native Detroiter, has a bachelor's degree in journalism from Michigan State University and a master's degree in journalism from Michigan State University and a master's degree in communications from the University of Michigan.
