Alger Hiss . . . refutes Chamber's story Chambers didn't pay debts - Hiss New York - Alger Hiss told a federal court jury today that he broke off his friendship with Whittacker Chambers in the spring of 1936 when he became convinced Chambers would not pay his debts, and never saw him again until the House Committee on Un-American Activities brought them together last year. Hiss, resuming the stand in his own defense on the 18th day of his federal court perjury trial, testified he knew Chambers then as "George Crosley," a freelance magazine writer who said he was gathering material for a series of articles about the Senate Muitions Investigation Committee.
