1986 Press Photo Namu The World's Only Captive Killer Whale - spa25300

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Namu, the world's only captive killer whale, rises to the water surface and spouts during his trip from Northern British Columbia to the Seattle Public Aquarium. The 22-foot long, 8,000-pound killer was captured June 23 by two fishermen, then sold to Edward I. "Ted" Griffin, owner of the Seattle Public Aquarium. Griffin built a pen, then towed the whale 400 miles to Seattle. The Seattle Aquarium, on Pier 56 in the heart of that city's central waterfront, features the world's largest collection of Puget Sound marine life. It is open daily, from 9 a.m. until dark.

Photo measures 7.25 x 8.25 inches.
