This picture is a portion of No. 75 in Mariner 7's far encounter series on Mars returned to Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, Monday night. It shows a large portion of the south polar cap and a dark area immediately above it. The spacecraft was about 270,000 miles away when the picturewasmade.
