1981 Press Photo American Indian powwow in Los Angeles, California - now12168

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Many of Los Angeles' 40,000 to 100,000 Indians--the estimates vary widely--may gather for cultural events like this recent powwow to mark the city's bicentennial, but otherwise there is little cohesiveness in what may be the nation's largest urban Indian population. Some no longer speak of their ancestry and others move back and forth from city to reservation. Without unity or leadership, the Indians are not getting the kind of services made available to other minority groups. Unemployment, health and alcoholism remain problems for many.

Photo is dated 1981.

Photo measures 10.5 x 8 inches.
