1927 Press Photo American soldier looks at graves' initial in British Cemetery

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
This is how things looked up along the British front when the initial grave diggers set to work. The crude crosses mark the resting places of some of Uncle Sam's fighters who went to death on field of battle in northern France and Belgium. In the pictures is a first lieutenant in the American Army, glancing at the headpieces, trying to discover the names of some of his men who fell in action and whose bodies, recovered, were gathered together and buried.

Photo is dated 1927.

Photo measures 8.5 x 6 inches.
