Description
Sakharov... Gorky, U.S.S.R.: Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov and his wife, Yelena Bonner, share a tender moment in his apartment in Gorky in a file photo made last February. The two began a hunger strike November 22nd to demand Soviet authorities allow their daughter-in-law, Lisa Alexeyeva, to leave the country to join Sakharov's stepson, Alexei Semyonov, her proxy husband, in the United States. Miss Alexeyeva said December 10 she had been told to pick up her exit visa December 11 and said she now believes the Nobel Peace Prize winner and his wife are out of physical danger. She said that she was informed that the two were now drinking orange juice and were out of danger after the 18-day hunger strike.
