Sister Beatrice spoon-fed Sigmund Letkiewicz, a resident who was unable to feed himself. At St. Anne's Home for the Elderly, the Catholic nuns wear traditional veils and habits, but in their pockets they carry beepers - electronic devices that can summon them at a moment's notice. Often they are summoned to a patient's deathbed, a chore they undertake with joy rather than sorrow. They say they witness the transfer to God of the souls for which they have cared. The nuns here are the Little Sister of the Poor, an international congregation of nuns who see their mission as serving the elderly who are poor. St. Anne's, at 3800 N. 92nd St., is one of the 44 nursing homes that the nuns operate in the United States, which is one of the 28 nations they serve. The congregation is celebrating the 150th anniversary of its founding this year, said Mother Maria, the diminutive nun who is the superior of the Milwaukee congregation of 16 women. (nuns)
