1994 Press Photo Jim Werych's scorched notebook, saved after van fire explosion

Description
A van fire nearly turned into disaster during afternoon rush hour Thursday as Jim Werych, of Menomonee Falls, was driving his custom van on W. Capitol Drive near the intersection with Highway 100. He looked in the rear-view mirror and saw flames coming out from under the wheels of his van. He pulled over, jumped out and within seconds, the van was engulfed in flames. The vehicle was a total loss. He was returning from Mitchell Airport after having dropped off his in-laws. "There is no way I could have gotten them out in time if they were in the van," said Werych, looking inside to see if he could salvage important business documents. He was able to salvage his scorched notebook (left), listing his business appointments for the next few weeks. Milwaukee
