Exploring The Earth With Microwaves: In a few years, the European space-experts want to explore the earth with microwaves. Among others, the ranges of application of the microwave-technology include a meteorological control of the seas (motion of the sea, tides, pollution etc), a control of sea-routes (for example the ice-drift, guidance of ship-routes a.s.o.). The Microwave Remote Sensing Experiment MRSE is a microwave - sensor for the observation of the Earth from space which can be used irrespective of weather by day and night. It's intended for the first flight of the European space -laboratory Space lab which will take place in 1983. As scientific observer, the payload-expert ULF Merbold will prospectively circle round the earth as the first West German astronaut. The costs of the development of the experimental device which was developed in Europe for the first time amounted 25 million Mark (about 10.9 million Dollar). After several preliminary exa- "(Illegible)" for the MRSE have already started about four years ago. In the middle of the eighties the European authority for astronautics ESA wants to "(Illegible)" it ERS - 1 equipped with microwave sensor for exploration of the oceans.
