Description
Safety Of Trawlers: Scientists at the National Physical Laboratory demonstrated yesterday how trawlers from which fish are caught ever the dide can capsize in 19 feet waves and a force 8 gale-conditions not uncommon in the North Atlantic. The test was done a model of 180-ft vessel, in a water tank a quarter of a mile long. The trawler and a model of a more modern trawler in which fish are caught ever the stern were exposed to simulated conditions of a heavy sea. When the stability of both vessels was altered to allow for calculated accumulation of 75 to 90 tons of ice in their structures, the side trawlr casized. The results show that research on ship design may help in the preparation of international safety standards. At present there are no statutory regulations governing the stability of trawlers, but the internation organisation of maritime nations set up a s~udy group eight years age to agree on standards.
