Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Caption: COLORADO INDIAN. In the western jungles of Ecuador, in the region of Santo Domingo de Los Colorados, live the peaceful "Red Indians" of Ecuador. They still decorate themselves with the blood-red dye of the achiote seed in the belief the color protects them against evil spirits. The unusual "headdress" is actually the Colorado male's way of wearing his hair, shaved and shaped in this fashion and plastered down with red clay.
