THEN AND NOW -- Above, Mario Andretti sits in the cockpit of his front-engine Stearley-Motor Freight Special as car owner Dough Stearley (left) watches crew members make adjustments. This date was April 19, 1964. The place was Trenton Speedway in New Jersey. The occasion was Mario's first career Indy Car race. He stared 16th and finished 11th in the 100-mile event, earning $526.90. Below, almost 30 years and $10 million in prize money later, Andretti drives the Kmart / Havoline Lola in the 1992 PPG Indy Car World Series to the all-time record for career Indy Car stats.
