1962 Press Photo Albany, NY Tulip Queen Nancy Self in Volendam, Netherlands

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Nancy Self, Albany's 1962 Tulip Queen, poses in traditional costume with a long-time resident of Volendam, port on the Zuider Zee in the Netherlands. Nancy toured the Netherlands as guest of Leo P. van Munching, US Importer of Heineken's Beer. The Zuider Zee, cut off from the sea by a huge dike, is now a great fresh water lake. In the 18th century, it began to fill in with sand and became shallow, putting an end to the Netherlands' "Golden Age" of colonization and seafaring. On Volendam, residents wear traditional Old Dutch dress on Sundays.

Photo is dated 1962.

Photo measures 7 x 9.5 inches.
