Hiram Sibley, second president of Western Union, was instrumental in the purchase of Alaska by the United States in 1867 - one of the world's greatest real estate bargains. Sibley proposed the purchase following his negotiations with Russia to lease a strip of land through Alaska on which Western Union planned to build a telegraph line linking Europe and the United States.
